Activism is imperative for political and social change. It changed a woman’s gender role from a stay at home wife to an independent full time working adult; given the opportunity to work, higher education, being able to vote and such. They fought for equality. It all started in the 19th and 20th century which is referred as first-wave feminism and they mainly fought for suffrage. Second-wave of feminism began in the early 1960s. The causes they fought for covered a wide range of issues; sexuality, family, the workplace and reproductive rights, to mention a few. This was a much needed change because women were treated mostly as trophies rather than individuals. Next we will move on the main point, the third and fourth wave. What their image and current state is.
Third-wave feminism is a continuation of the second-wave which fought for individualism. It didn’t bode well and ended up in the fourth-wave we currently are in. You might ask what is so special about this and we will let you decide that. Now they aren’t as united as previously. You have a plethora of topics where feminists have a different opinion. E.g. there are sex positive and sex negative feminists where sex positivity is saying that it’s empowering for a woman to be able to choose what she wants to do with her own body. On the flip side, sex negativity says that it’s demeaning for a woman to be involved with porn. Feminists are taking different stances on the same issue. They’re not moving in one direction but in multiple directions. This is confusing because a movement usually has one cause or several similar. However, when it comes to feminism it has many diverse points of view from minor to major topics. It is as if they are all different movements because it is either black or white. The definition of feminism needs to change or the ones with points of views that aren’t relevant to feminism needs to view themselves as what they are. E.g. some of them call themselves feminists but their opinions put them in the category of a misandrist and it received attention. The faces representing feminism are the ones going viral and the ones having outrageous opinions. They are using their voices to give feminism a bad name. With the addition of social media and how easily accessible it is, it has given anyone a platform to spew their ludicrous and often false statements. These statements go viral and surprisingly enough quite a few feminists blindly back it without any further thinking. This is one of the reasons why feminism is often connected to man-hating and where the term feminazi stems from. Polls show that actually many women don’t want to associate themselves with feminism because of the way it is being currently represented.
In conclusion, I can confidently say that there needs to be a change. It is not fair that feminism once fought for noble causes and that it is now reduced to hate speech and bringing down fellow women and men. What are your thoughts about this? In what direction or change needs to happen? Or do you think something will happen if we let it lead its own course?
